Every year, seven teachers around the state are honored by the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico, based on their excellence in the classroom, and their commitment to the teaching profession.

This recognition alternates among high school, middle school, and elementary school teachers each year.

Farmington High School had three teachers nominated this year for the award: language arts teacher Stephanie Jaquez, Media Arts teacher Erin McGinley, and AP Seminar teacher Regina Atencio.

Along with 15 other teachers around the state, Jaquez made it to the semifinal round.

“It’s very flattering. You never know what can happen until it comes up,” said Jaquez, when asked how she feels to have been nominated. This award absolutely gives an outside voice, an opportunity to recognize someone you think is worthy in the profession.”

The nomination process is a long one that includes answering essay questions and giving reasons why the individual deserves to be nominated. If someone is willing to go through that much just to nominate a person then this person must deserves great recognition.

Jaquez has taught at Farmington High for 12 years, and brings smiles to so many of the students she teaches.

Tristan Nguyen, a senior at Farmington High, stated, “I had Mrs. Jaquez my sophomore year, and she really helped me understand a lot of what I really didn’t know. I truly believe she deserves this type of recognition.”

Jaquez is one of the school’s golf team coaches, and the team has won numerous awards in her years of coaching.

Zack Holesinger, a senior at Farmington High, has been on the golf team the past few years.

“She’s a really great coach,” Holesinger said. “She does what’s best not only for golf, for you as a person. She treats everyone like family — as if she’s known them forever.”

The finalists will be announced in December, and Farmington High is cheering for Jaquez.

“I am not sure who nominated me, but I would like to say thank you (to them) for thinking about me,” Jaquez said graciously.
