Student’s progress reports were distributed at Farmington High on Thursday, Feb. 9, during second hour. Students were asked to take a screenshot of their grades, or received a hand held copy, to take home to show parents.

With parent-teacher conferences starting that same day after school, it was important that parents see their child’s grades in order to meet with teachers.

Progress reports may benefit the students, but there are disadvantages.

World History teacher, Elizabeth PettyJohn-Broten stated, “I think for the students who don’t regularly check Powerschool or keep up their grades, it’s a good reality check. However, I don’t think the screenshots are seen by many parents.”

Broten also stated that it could, “give students who are passing a false sense of security, and they kind of slack off.”

Riley Haller, a student at Farmington High said, “If kids are responsible enough for keeping up with their grades, they should be responsible enough to show their parents.”

However, if student’s receive bad grades on their reports, it may change the way they feel about their classes.

Haller said, “Part of it is on me, part of it is on the teacher.”

At the end of each semester, progress reports are used as checkpoints to improve the school grade.

The school moved to having students keep an electronic progress report instead of printing paper copies in order to save money on paper. It is estimated that about 3000 progress reports are given out every year because students are given two per year.
