Kill the Boy Band, by Goldy Moldavsky tells the story of four internet friends who meet in New York city to get tickets to see their favorite band, “The Ruperts,” (An obvious parody of One Direction) only to wind up to kidnapping one of the members and getting into to worse trouble from there.

An intriguing aspect of the book is that despite being told from a first person point of view, the reader never learns the main character’s name.

Kill the Boy Band examines the world of fangirls and fandoms.

Most people on the internet have seen or experienced the tropes presented in the novel, such as fan faction, Twitter wars, death threats, rumors, and overall fandom drama. What’s unique about the presentation of these is that Moldavsky puts a name and face to them through her characters.

This has the poetics to become the summer must-read of 2017 in the young adult genre. It may become the next The Perks of Being a Wall Flower.  What makes it even more remarkable is that the book is Moldavsky’s debut novel. If this is her first, who knows what the future looks like for her writing.

This book has left me reeling for three weeks now. I read the entire 323 pages in one day. This is an unappreciated gem.
