The FHS Golf team’s first varsity match was held April 3, 2017, at Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland, New Mexico.

Zack Holesinger took first place for the boys team, Meghan Graff took third place for the girls team, and the boys team took second place overall.

To prepare for tournaments players practice Monday through Friday and are encouraged to continue on weekends. Currently, the golf team is made up of 24 boys and eight girls.

“Most of the time, FHS is in either first or second place, next to Piedra Vista,” explained girl’s coach Stephanie Jaquez. “They have the most challenging team this year. Even though they are 6A, they still compete in some of our local tournaments.”

Many people may wonder how golf tournaments work.

Jaquez explained that typically, “Golf tournaments are held during the school day and we travel all over the state, especially for the State tournament. We usually tee off around 9:30 in the morning and finish around 2:30 in the afternoon. Boys compete against boys and girls compete against girls and there is individual stroke play. Every now and then for junior varsity we have a scramble format. The courses we go to provide sack lunches during the matches and some courses have a burger cookout for us.”

Boy’s coach Jonathan Matajcich said that the point of golf is to, “Get the ball in the hole.”

The John Hall Innovational was held on April 6.

The tournament, named after long-time FHS golf coach John Hall, is a treat because Mr. Hall always comes and visits with the athletes before they tee off.

He was one of the best golf coaches Farmington High School has ever had,” explained Jaquez.

“We are looking forward to going to the State championship on May 8-9, at the Canyon Club in Albuquerque. Zack Holesinger, Danny Carpenter, and Meghan Graff have all qualified as individuals so far, and the boy’s team has qualified for the team event.

“We are looking forward to seeing our athletes bring home a State title this year,” added Jaquez.
